Job Summary
The Distribution Lineman B is responsible for assisting in the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical power lines and related equipment. This role is the second-highest level in the lineman progression and is designed for employees gaining full proficiency toward becoming a Distribution Lineman A. The Lineman B is expected to perform a broad range of duties safely, efficiently, and in alignment with company standards.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Work safely while constructing, maintaining, or repairing energized and de-energized distribution systems
- Set poles and anchors by safety standards and technical specifications
- Maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in a clean and functional condition
- Perform rigorous physical labor as part of regular duties
- Learn and work with distribution voltages and understand induced voltage
- Assist in reading blueprints, recognizing structural issues, and inspecting infrastructure
- Operate from aerial devices and bucket trucks to complete assigned tasks
- Work collaboratively with crews while demonstrating initiative and growing technical knowledge
- Safely work alone on de-energized lines when necessary
- Assist in stringing, sagging, and framing conductor wire and structures
- Install basic line hardware, compression connections, and pole framing components
- Climb wood and steel structures safely and effectively
- Properly inspect, install, and remove PPE, cover-up, and rubber goods
- Understand and apply grounding techniques, minimum approach distances, and tagging procedures
- Perform basic bucket rescue or escape maneuvers
- Tie knots, operate hand lines, and handle materials and tools effectively
Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Experience installing and maintaining overhead/underground electrical lines
- Valid CDL Class A license required to be maintained while in the position
- Valid First Aid, CPR, and Pole Top Rescue certification required
- Must pass drug, alcohol, background, MVR, and clearinghouse checks upon hire and continuously while in position
- Must pass a DOT physical examination
- Able and willing to travel long distances on short notice
- Able and willing to work extended hours, including overtime and weekends
- Comfortable working in all types of weather conditions, including inclement weather
- Understanding of utility operations and job site safety protocols
- Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Ability to work independently or within a team
- Professional, dependable, and committed to high safety standards
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to climb poles, ladders, and structures regularly
- Frequent physical activity, including bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and reaching
- Must be able to work at elevated heights and in confined spaces
- Must be able to grip, manipulate, and handle tools and small parts with precision
- Visual acuity is required for identifying materials, reading instruments, and working with energized components
- Must be able to perform physical tasks for extended periods, sometimes under adverse weather conditions
- Ability to wear and use full PPE (hard hats, rubber gloves, safety harnesses, etc.) for long durations
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work environment in all seasons and weather conditions
- Exposure to electrical hazards, construction equipment, noise, and heights
- Travel to job sites is required with occasional overnight stays
- Extended work hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays when necessary
